I have a request that I would like to share with you and to ask you to pray for someone. You don’t know them, but you certainly know of them.
I would like to ask you all to pray for Kayne West.
Yes, that Kayne West who robbed the stage from Taylor Swift during her acceptance speech for “Best Female Video” back at the 2009 Video Music Awards. Yes, that Kanye West who released the Yeezy Boost sneaker line in collaboration with Adidas (which my son Nevin is dying to get his hands on one day-yeah, not on my salary). Yes, that same Kanye west who blamed then President George W. Bush for Hurricane Katrina and stated that the President, “didn’t care about black people.” Yes, that Kanye West who is (surprisingly) a pretty avid supporter of Donald Trump, much to the chagrin of his peers in the music, fashion, and arts industry and, well, pretty much everyone else. And yes, that Kanye West who married Kim Kardashian in 2014.
Yes, I’m talking about that Kim Kardashian, daughter of Robert, the defense attorney for OJ Simpson during his infamous trial, and Kris Kardashian, who is the former wife of Caitlyn (Bruce) Jenner. Yes, that Kim Kardashian of such TV fame as “Keeping Up with the Kardashians,” “Kourtney and Kim Take New York,”and “Kourtney and Kim Take Miami.” Gotta love reality TV.
Yes, I’m talking about that Kanye West.
And, I must tell you, that Kanye West is one of my favorite people on Earth right now. No, seriously, I mean that sincerely. I’ve always loved his music. I’ve always loved his style and art. I’ve always loved his personality. Don’t misunderstand me though. I’m not saying that I agree with him because there’s a whole lot there that I certainly do disagree with him on and there are aspects of what he does that I find to be downright…what’s the word for it…. sinful, but lately as I’ve been following him in the media, I have grown to love him even more.
Why you ask? Well, let me tell you. Are you ready for this? Because Kanye West has become fervent, sold out, hardcore, follower of Jesus Christ. And no, I don’t mean, like, some Hollywood-post-modern-everyone-gets-to-Heaven version of Jesus Christ. I mean the same Jesus Christ who died on the cross for our sins and pronounced Himself the ONE AND ONLY way to Heaven, Jesus Christ. I don’t know when exactly this took place, but I do know it’s been within the past year or so. And I do know, based on his own personal testimony about his faith, the testimony of well-respected Pastors and theologians alike, and, most importantly, about the evident change in his lifestyle, that this is real. And God in Heaven I am so incredibly happy.
Now, you might be thinking, Steve, you’re nuts, this has got to be a publicity stunt or perhaps you’re misinformed, or you just don’t know what you’re talking about. Well, that may be true, I really could be taking the bait on this one, though I certainly hope not, but I would invite you to take a gander at the following links and judge for yourself. No, seriously, please take a look and validate this or yourself rather than taking it for just another celebrity who says they found Jesus. Go ahead, my blog will still be here when you get back.
Article 5 <—- If you’re still having doubts about how you should react to this, then you need to read this article…then, go back and read the above mentioned ones again.
But also, pray for Kanye because he is one of the first huge stars in a very long time who has gotten media coverage for his conversion. And not in a slanderous way either. Like, legit media outlets are covering his “Sunday Services” and his testimony sharing at various churches. Big time media outlets are sharing the news when other big stars like Brad Pitt, Justin Bieber, or Courtney Love show up to church with him. If Kanye had a platform for himself formerly, he seems to now be using that platform for the Gospel message of Jesus Christ.
So, back to the request that I started this blog with to pray for Kanye West. Why? Well first off, because he is a brother in Christ and that’s our responsibility as Christ-followers. To pray for one another. He needs to be built up in his relationship with the Lord. He needs that “hedge o’ protection” wrapped fully around he and his wife. He needs to feel that support from his eternal family as we lift a fellow believe up.
Again, I know you might still be thinking that I’m silly for spending a blog post writing about Kanye West but I’ve been seriously excited about this news for a while now and I wanted to share it with you, in case you missed it, because with his platform and reach, Kanye West could become this generations Billy Graham…in a strange rapper-media mogul-fashionista-turned-Jesus-lover kinda way. Ok, maybe not exactly like Billy Graham but sorta? I honestly pray that he does and that the Gospel message of Jesus Christ continues to solidify in his heart in such a way that the whole world sees a man changed by God and that it allows him to share the message that Jesus Christ is the only way to salvation and that because of his work and ministry, that throngs of people come to know the Lord because of him. I hope that because of what God has done and is doing in his life, that other music performers and movie stars come to know Jesus Christ and realize that the content they produce doesn’t honor God, including his own. And I hope that because of what Jesus is doing in Kanye’s life that the media wakes up and pulls its head out of its proverbial hip-pocket and realizes that it needs to change to script on what they produce and we subsequently, and sinfully, consume.
So please, seriously, I mean it with every fiber of my being, pray for Kanye West. He needs it.
